Epithelial barrier breakdown is considered a major contributor to disease for both atopic dermatitis and chronic inflammatory enteropathy in dogs. In fact, dogs may have “leaky” gut and skin barriers before clinical signs are apparent. Early recognition of epithelial and/or epidermal barrier dysfunction is important so that patient-centered multimodal modification of nutritional and environmental factors can be implemented.

This lecture details which nutrients may play an important role in managing dogs with atopic dermatitis or chronic inflammatory enteropathy to help restore barrier function.
