Gerontology – nutrition as a key to healthy aging

Senior pets form a large and growing population, so veterinarians are more motivated than ever to increase their knowledge about how best to improve health and longevity for these long-term companions.

The influential factors in aging, from the microscopic to the macroscopic level, were discussed during this year’s event, with topics ranging from the role of the mitochondria, to the impact of minerals and fatty acids, to the importance of dietary protein intake.

In addition to these presentations by outside experts, ongoing research by Purina in gerontology and nutritional science has identified opportunities to support older pets, and sustain the human-animal bond.

This website hosts a range of exclusive scientific content on the topic of gerontology, including interviews with internationally renowned experts, articles and video presentations, with a practical summary of the research to take away and apply in practice, helping veterinarians to provide effective care for older pets.

Lean body mass in health and longevity

Lean body mass in health and longevity

Both pets and people experience age-related weight loss, and this puts them both at higher risk for age-related diseases and mortality. Human studies may improve understanding about how to prevent this loss in dogs and cats... and vice versa.
