L'obésité chez les chiens et les chats est un problème qui a pris une ampleur mondiale1-5.

Chez certaines populations, la prévalence d'animaux obèses et en surpoids diagnostiqués par les vétérinaires atteint jusqu'à 65 % chez les chiens et jusqu'à 63 % chez les chats2,3.

Il est essentiel pour la santé des animaux de compagnie de comprendre, d'identifier et de prendre en charge leur surpoids. Des études montrent que les animaux en surpoids ou obèses vivent moins longtemps que leurs homologues plus minces6-9. L'obésité est également liée à de nombreuses maladies, comme l'arthrose et le diabète félin10,11.

Pourtant, les études montrent que de nombreux propriétaires d'animaux de compagnie ne considèrent pas que le poids de leur animal pose problème3,12,13. Et à peine plus de la moitié des propriétaires indiquent que leur vétérinaire aborde régulièrement la question du poids lors de l'examen annuel de leur animal de compagnie4. Cela fait manquer une occasion de dialogue critique pour aborder les risques que posent le surpoids et l'obésité pour la santé des animaux de compagnie.
